Under general supervision, a Painter performs a variety of skilled work in preparing surfaces for painting, mixing paints, matching colors, and applying, by brush or spray gun, all types of paint and protective coatings. Typical duties may include:

  • Preparing surfaces for painting by sanding, greasing, sandblasting, scraping, washing, burning, grinding, and brushing to remove old paint, rust, scale and irregular surfaces.

  • Applying paints, protective coatings, and sealants by brush, roller, or spray painting equipment to a variety of structures, machinery, equipment, vehicles, and surfaces to include interiors and exteriors of office buildings, pumping plants, filter plants, reservoirs, tanks, outlet towers, fences, electric motors, generators, pumps, fire hydrants, valves, piping, office furniture, wood, plastic, metal and concrete surfaces.

  • Mixing paints, stains, varnishes, shellacs, lacquers, sealants and other coating materials by adding thinners as necessary to achieve proper consistency.

  • Matching color by adding pigments to paint to obtain appropriate colors.

  • Sanding, buffing, rubbing, or polishing surfaces as necessary to obtain proper adhesion between coats and to achieve desired finish.

  • Mixing and applying elastomeric sealants to the interior of reservoirs, using air-powered chipping guns to prepare the surface.

  • Spreading canvases or other coverings over furniture and other objects to protect them from splattered paint.

  • Using and calibrating personal air monitors.

  • Using safety equipment and clothing such as respirators, glasses, blast helmets, earplugs, fall protection equipment, etc.

  • Erecting scaffolding and rigging equipment of all types in preparation for painting work.

  • Cleaning and maintaining brushes, rollers and spray painting equipment.

  • Applying sheet rubber and synthetic tank linings.

  • Making rough estimates of labor, materials and supplies necessary for the performance of specific assignments.

  • Installing glass and acrylic panes, and ceramic, vinyl and asphalt tiles.

  • The salary range is $6,146 per month increasing to $6,453, $6,776, $7,115 after 12, 24, and 36 months, respectively. A 3.7% salary increase is anticipated to take place effective April 18, 2016.

    Any combination of education and experience that has led to the acquisition of the knowledge and abilities required to perform work duties. Typical means of acquiring the essential knowledge and abilities is a combination of training and experience equivalent to:

    1. A high school diploma or its equivalent, AND

    2. Eighteen months experience comparable to East Bay Municipal Utility District’s (EBMUD’s)

      Painting Worker III classification, including satisfactory completion of the appropriate courses

      and advanced on-the-job training as specified in EBMUD’s Trades Training Program; OR

    3. Attainment of recognized journey level status as a Painter in general painting work.

    4. Must have a valid California driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.

    5. Willingness to work outside of business hours as needed (weekends or overtime).
