DEFINITION/DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

DEFINITION 

Under general supervision performs skilled mechanical maintenance and repair work in the shop and at waterworks facilities; sets up and operates a variety of machine tools used in fabricating repair parts and fittings; and performs related work as required. 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS 

This is the journey level classification in this series. This classification is distinguished from the Mechanical Maintenance Foreman in that the Mechanical Maintenance Foreman is responsible for planning and directing the activities of Maintenance Machinists and other workers. 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

  1. Performs precise and complex repair, maintenance, and installation work on a variety of waterworks facilities to include large and small industrial pumps, shafts and bearings, hydraulic controls and regulators of various types, valves, and allied piping systems; chemical feed and processing equipment; belt, chain and screw conveyors; sluice gates, compressors, scrapers, and plumbing, heating, and ventilating, and air conditioning equipment. 
  2. Fabricates parts and fittings, makes assemblies, and repairs units used in maintenance work from work orders, mechanical drawings, specifications, sketches, and verbal instructions.
  3. Sets up and operates machine tools such as engine lathes, key seaters, milling machines, drill presses, planers, grinders, etc. 
  4. Uses hand and power tools and uses precision measuring instruments such as height and depth gauges, calipers, verniers, and micrometers of various types. 
  5. Uses gas electric arc and spray welding equipment to cut, form, join and build up metal, and fabricate parts. 
  6. Operates and maintains heating, ventilating, and air conditioning equipment. 
  7. Sets up and operates necessary rigging equipment to move or place heavy items in repair and installation work. 
  8. Makes rough estimates of labor and materials necessary for performance of the work; keeps records and makes reports of work performed. 
  9. Trains and directs other workers; ensures that proper safety precautions are observed. 
  10. Makes sketches of work to be performed or of work completed. 
  11. May work underground in sewers, channels, tunnels, or other structures to remove obstructions or to install or repair equipment. 
  12. May sharpen, temper, straighten or heat treat steel. 

CLASSIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Knowledges, Skills and Abilities 

Thorough Knowledge of: The use and operation of machine and hand tools and equipment used in the machinist plumbing trade. 

Working Knowledge of: Metal fabrication principles and techniques; the working properties of various metals; methods of operation, maintenance, installation and repair of heavy industrial pumps, valves, hydraulic regulation and control apparatus, hazardous gas and chemical dispensing equipment and related mechanical equipment; heat treatment of metals; rigging principles used in moving or placing heavy equipment; safety practices and precautions pertaining to the work; shop mathematics. 

General Knowledge of: The use and operation of welding and gas cutting equipment; the operation and maintenance of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems; metallurgy. 

Skill in: Setting up, using and operating machine, hand, and power tools of the machinist and plumbing trade; using precision measuring instruments; using welding and gas cutting equipment; reading interpreting and working from mechanical drawings and specifications; making rough sketches of work performed. 

Ability to: Perform a variety of mechanical maintenance and repair work to shop, plant and field equipment; keep records and make reports; train and direct the work of subjourney employees; make estimates of labor and materials; establish and maintain effective working relationships. 

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that has led to the acquisition of the knowledges, skills and abilities as indicated above. 

Typical ways of acquiring these knowledges, skills and abilities are: 

Completion of the twelfth grade, or its equivalent, and either: 

1. Sixteen months' experience comparable to the District's Machining and Maintenance Worker III classification, including satisfactory completion of the appropriate courses and advanced on-the-job training, as specified in the District's Maintenance Trades Training Program for Maintenance Machinists; or 

2. Attainment of recognized journey level status as a Maintenance Machinist or Millwright with work experience primarily in maintenance/repair rather than limited to production machine tool operations. 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Must possess physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the job, including sufficient strength to lift heavy parts and tools weighing up to 90 pounds, sufficient agility to climb ladders to a height of 40 feet, and sufficient stamina to perform strenuous work for an extended period of time. Must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and work overtime as needed. May be required to be clean shaven on a scheduled basis as required to wear respiratory protection equipment. 

LICENSE, CERTIFICATES & CREDENTIALS

Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
