Facility Technician III

Location: Vandenberg Air Force Base, California

Status: Regular / Full time

Position Summary

Assist the Astrotech VAFB staff for the overall operation and maintenance of all facility systems including HVAC, plumbing, pneumatic, overhead conveyances (cranes), fire protection systems, and electrical and communication systems.  Provide preventative and unscheduled maintenance, emergency repairs, new construction and renovation projects under the direction and guidance of the Facilities Manager.  Provide general technician support services to the Mission Manager as required for customer payload processing operations.  Assist in the overall integration and upkeep of the preventative maintenance program and facilities upkeep.  Individual must be willing to occasionally work on shifts, holidays and weekends during customer occupancy periods.  Individual must be willing to travel minimally for training and cross training at sister location. Individual must be able to qualify for a Security Clearance.

Job Environment

Astrotech's mission is to provide reliable facilities for customer provided satellites, payloads and associated equipment.  It is essential that all facilities are properly maintained at all times to ensure that immediate use is available for unscheduled circumstances.  Customer interaction is often required to ensure special requirements and needs are fulfilled.  Each customer has unique requirements that must be addressed to ensure a quality workplace with respect to HVAC, overhead cranes, pheumatics and security.  ITAR and security considerations reflect application of site specific proceedures and requires interfacing with government and customer security officers.  This position requires excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills to ensure that customer requirements are adequately established and understood.  Payload processing operations often require immediate real time action related responses.  HVAC and facility mechanical requirements often demand new and innovative means and methods for satisfying customer requirements.      

Specialized Knowledge and Competencies

This position requires the individual to have a basic knowledge of electrical system, HVAC, communications and mechanical systems.  Must have a basic knowledge of computer use to include Word and Excel.  Must be able to use common hand tools as well as electrical, and communication meters and equipment.  Must be physically fit and capable to work with Hazardous chemicals and periodically lift heavy items.  Must be physically capable and able to work at high elevations using man-lift equipment and wearing safety fall protection equipment.  Must have the personal drive, motivation, and initiative to find and resolve minor situations without supervision.  Ability to climb over 50 feet and lift a minimum of 50 lbs.   High reach training, forklift safety training, and CPR/First Aid certification.   Excellent written and oral communication skills required.

Education and Experience:

High school graduate or equivalent required, Associate's degree in Industrial Technology or related technical discipline is preferred.  Minimum of five years of experience in facility maintenance, with an emphasis on electrical and communication systems.  Must have a working knowledge of common hand tools and repair equipment.  Must be willing to learn and understand the concepts of preparation for flight of customer space hardware and critical ground support equipment.  Must be able to follow and carry out directions of the senior staff to provide customer satisfaction.  Proven, continuous innovation and improvement and adaptability skills.  Demonstrated planning and organizing, customer focus and teamwork skills. Experience with clean room environments perferred but not required.
