Summary: The Driver Trainer is an associate with a broad background in transportation operations who will effectively train and/or retrain drivers on company policies, departmental procedures, and the safe operation of company equipment, along with Saladino’s Values and culture. This job is considered SAFETY SENSITIVE.

Essential Functions:

Supports and promotes the mission, vision, and values of the company.

Follows all departmental procedures and company policies, including attendance.

Executes training plan for each new or transferred associate to include and reinforce safe work practices, guiding behaviors, departmental procedures, and productivity.

Assists associates with achieving productivity standards; retrains associates as a result of disciplinary action or a performance improvement plan.

Trains and certifies drivers on material handling equipment (pallet jacks, liftgates, etc).

Provides daily documentation and weekly report of training activities to management, including associates’ progress and character.

Provides input to management regarding performance and character issues for use in associates’ reviews.

Meets or exceeds company productivity standards.

Maintains current versions of all training programs; recommends modifications to current training programs or creation of new ones.

Interacts appropriately with onboard computer system.

Assists driver manager and supervisor in investigation of customer and driver complaints.

Develops strong relationships with associates and management.

Fills in for any transportation position as needed.

Observes safety and security procedures, reports potentially unsafe conditions, reports injuries/accidents immediately, demonstrates safe behavior at all times, especially when using company property and/or operating equipment or vehicles.

Safety Sensitive jobs are held to a higher standard as reflected in performance evaluations and are subject to Random drug or alcohol testing.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic mathematical skills
  • Detail oriented with good organizational skills
  • Demonstrated listening, communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills
  • Extensive knowledge of Saladino’s Associate Handbook, Safety Program, Driver Handbook, and D.O.T. rules and regulations
  • Extensive knowledge of Saladino’s products and operations
  • Extensive knowledge of roadways and cities of area serviced
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports and correspondence; ability to speak effectively before groups of associates
  • Ability to use computer, with basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Ability to evaluate associate’s skill levels throughout all phases of training and employment
  • Ability to drive any route assigned including lay-over routes
  • Ability to travel to other company locations to assist with training, as needed and with adequate notice
  • Ability to flex schedule to meet training demands


Education and/or Experience

  • Minimum of 21 years of age.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of two years of commercial class “A” driving experience preferred
  • Minimum of one year of experience as a Saladino’s route driver with a performance record meeting minimum standards for at least 12 consecutive months


Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Class A CDL and Medical Card
  • Clean DMV printout (2 or less points)
  • Doubles endorsement required
  • Successful completion of company Safety and Training program.
