KKCS is seeking a licensed Civil Engineer for a full-time Transmission/Distribution Engineer (T&D Engineer) position in San Diego, CA. The position falls within the utilities vertical’s western delivery operations. The engineer will be working to complete projects that support the Client’s utility customers transmission and distribution projects ranging from 4kV to 500kV.  The engineer will work with in-house and client engineers and designers.

In this role, the engineer will be responsible for engineering and design deliverables, quality control and assurance as well as schedule compliance. Working in and or leading a project team the engineer will ensure the deliverables meet client, state and federal specifications. This role requires technical leadership and guidance to the engineering and design team members. The engineer will work closely with the project management, program management and project staff to organize, develop and execute various projects.

The T&D Engineer is an exempt position and reports to the Program Manager or Delivery Manager with supervisory responsibility for program leads, delivery leads and consultants.


  • Supports the Program and Delivery Managers with all duties associated with executing the assigned projects.
  • Plans, designs, engineers and oversees the civil/structural design of transmission and distribution line projects using PLS-CADD or O’calc for various project types and clients. This includes developing plan and profiles, loading diagrams, staking tables, stringing charts, sag charts and other associated client requested deliverables.
  • Promotes and performs quality assurance and quality control reviews of deliverables associated with the project design in accordance with EASi principles. Engineer must ensure compliance with NESC, California General Orders (95 etc.), ASCE, client design standards, safety requirements, and industry practices.
  • Provides leadership, training and mentoring to develop core engineering competencies of the transmission and distribution engineering and design teams.
  • Executes project schedules that incorporate all facets of design including client reviews, licensing etc.
  • Develops material and construction specifications.
  • Takes part in developing engineering and design process and workflows for each scope of work assigned to the transmission and distribution engineering teams.
  • Performs and/or audit engineering calculations to assure safety, quality and performance of overall engineered design and associated equipment.
  • Assists in preparation and monitoring/controlling complex construction schedules to assure timely completion of construction work associated with our engineered designs.
  • Performs on site project design or investigation.
  • Evaluates project feasibility in association with complex environmental, right of way (land rights), real estate, survey, permitting, licensure and constructability constraints to ensure best valued design that meets desired schedule and cost outcomes.

Required Experience & Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Electrical Engineering
  • Professional Engineering license in US required
  • At least 7+ years engineering experience in the electric utility industry
  • Demonstrated PLS-CADD Proficiency with PLS-POLE and PLS-TOWER
  • Team player with ability to work in a highly cross-functional and virtual environment

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (preferred); advanced educational degree(s) a plus
  • California PE license preferred (minimum 3 years)
  • Experience in Distribution and/or Transmission Engineering
