This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified Assistant Resident Engineer- Electrical Engineer to work with BART. If you have a valid Electrical PE license and experience with Project Management, Electrical Power and Lighting Design this may be the position for you.



The principal duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Resident Engineer include, but are not limited to:

  • Reading and interpreting project plans, electrical specifications, permits, other pertinent contract documents including managing the RFI and change order process and staffing issues
  • Documenting and informing the Project Representative of relevant observations, including the progress of the work, problems that develop, and work proactively in identifying potential problems/issues
  • Recommending workable solutions to problems/issues encountered for approval by Project Representative
  • Monitoring the contractor’s safety program for compliance with the construction contract requirements
  • Maintaining daily contact with the construction contractor regarding project’s schedule and status.
    • Preparing neat and accurate diaries and photographs recording project progression including thorough and accurate records of the contractor’s operations that measure, calculate, and document quantities of installed materials in accordance with Project Representatives procedures, format and required computer programs
    • Preparing documents for submission to local code authorities, PG&E, research and apply all necessary local codes, respond to code authority questions and comments, interact with contractors and inspectors as necessary
  • Coordinating with all designers, and technical resources
  • Reviewing working drawings for power, lighting and high voltage systems for various projects
  • Assisting in managing projects from kick-off meeting to final construction administration
  • Coordinating with Project Managers to determine workload and project resources


  • Prefer Valid California Electrical PE license with a minimum of 5 years of experience in Electrical Power, lighting and high voltage design (10 year preferred), or Civil PE license with electrical experience
  • Working knowledge of State and local building codes, including California Title 24 Energy code, and similar electrical codes, standards, and regulations
  • Written and verbal communication skills to function with all levels of management and staff
  • Demonstrated ability to apply principles of engineering to solve complex problems, deal with a variety of dynamic variables, and interpret instructions presented in various forms
  • Proficient in computer use, applications, and software programs in the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, or equivalent)
  • Proven understanding of electrical construction methods, compliance, and materials and ability of interacting with contractors in regard to constructability, equipment placement, general construction techniques and methods, etc. as required by the project
